What Information Should You Provide When Ordering a Custom Battery Pack?

When ordering a custom lithium battery pack, providing the right technical information helps the manufacturer select the appropriate cells, BMS, wiring, charger, enclosure and battery configuration.

Whether you need a battery for an electric vehicle, e-bike, scooter, drone, solar system, robotics, UPS or industrial equipment, the more complete your requirements are, the easier it is to design a suitable battery pack.

1. Tell Us the Battery Application

First, explain where and how the battery will be used.

For example:

  • Electric scooter
  • E-bike
  • Electric motorcycle
  • EV
  • Drone / UAV
  • Agriculture drone
  • Robotics
  • ROV / UGV / AGV / AMR
  • Solar energy storage
  • UPS / inverter
  • Industrial equipment
  • Portable equipment
  • Medical or electronic equipment
  • Prototype or R&D project

The application determines the required voltage, current, capacity, battery chemistry, BMS and mechanical design.

2. Required Voltage

Tell the manufacturer your required battery voltage.

Common examples include:

Battery RequirementTypical Configuration
3.7V1S Li-ion
7.4V2S Li-ion
11.1V3S Li-ion
14.8V4S Li-ion
25.6V8S LiFePO₄
36V10S Li-ion
48V13S Li-ion / 15S LiFePO₄
51.2V16S LiFePO₄
60VApplication-dependent
72VApplication-dependent

Important: Specify whether the voltage refers to nominal voltage, fully charged voltage, or the equipment’s required operating voltage.

3. Required Capacity (Ah)

Tell us the required battery capacity in Ah (ampere-hours).

Examples:

  • 36V 10Ah
  • 51.2V 50Ah
  • 60V 30Ah
  • 72V 40Ah
  • 48V 20Ah
  • 12.8V 100Ah

If you don’t know the required Ah, provide the load power and required operating time, and the battery can be sized from those requirements.

A basic energy calculation is:

Energy (Wh) = Voltage (V) × Capacity (Ah)

For example:

48V × 20Ah = 960Wh

4. Maximum Current Requirement

This is one of the most important specifications.

Provide:

  • Continuous current
  • Maximum/peak current
  • Starting current, if applicable
  • Motor/controller current
  • Typical operating current

For an EV application, provide the motor power and controller current if available.

For example:

Motor: 1500W
Battery: 48V
Controller: 30A continuous / 50A peak

This information helps determine the appropriate cells, BMS and wiring.

5. Battery Chemistry

Tell us which chemistry you require, if already specified.

Common options include:

NMC / Li-ion

Suitable for applications where relatively high energy density and compact size are important.

LiFePO₄ (LFP)

Often selected for applications where cycle life, thermal characteristics and energy-storage requirements are important.

If you are unsure whether NMC or LiFePO₄ is appropriate, provide your application, voltage, capacity, current, dimensions and operating conditions so the requirements can be evaluated.

6. Battery Dimensions

Provide the maximum available space for the battery.

Include:

  • Length
  • Width
  • Height
  • Maximum weight
  • Mounting limitations

For example:

Maximum battery size: 300 × 150 × 100 mm

A drawing, CAD file or photograph of the available space can be especially useful.

7. Required Weight

If weight is important, specify the maximum acceptable battery weight.

This is particularly important for:

  • Drones
  • E-bikes
  • Racing vehicles
  • Portable equipment
  • Robotics
  • Aerospace-related applications

A weight limit can influence the choice of cell type, chemistry and pack configuration.

8. BMS Requirements

Tell us whether you need a standard or smart BMS.

Possible requirements include:

  • Overcharge protection
  • Over-discharge protection
  • Over-current protection
  • Short-circuit protection
  • Temperature protection
  • Cell balancing
  • Bluetooth monitoring
  • CAN communication
  • RS485
  • UART
  • Display connection

Also provide the required continuous and peak BMS current.

9. Charging Requirements

Provide the charger information whenever possible.

For example:

  • Charger output voltage
  • Charger current
  • Charging time requirement
  • Existing charger model
  • Connector type

The charger must be compatible with the battery chemistry and series configuration.

10. Connector & Cable Requirements

Specify your preferred output connector if you have one.

Examples include:

  • XT30
  • XT60
  • XT90
  • Anderson connector
  • DC connector
  • Custom connector

Also provide:

  • Cable length
  • Cable gauge, if specified
  • Positive/negative polarity
  • Separate charge and discharge ports, if required

11. Communication Requirements

For smart applications, tell us whether the battery needs communication with the vehicle or equipment.

Possible interfaces include:

  • CAN
  • RS485
  • UART
  • Bluetooth
  • Display communication

If your equipment has a communication protocol or CAN specification, provide the available documentation.

12. Enclosure Requirements

Tell us how the battery should be physically packaged.

You can specify:

  • Plastic enclosure
  • Aluminium enclosure
  • Custom metal enclosure
  • Carbon fiber enclosure
  • Heat-shrink pack
  • Custom battery box
  • Wall-mounted enclosure

Also provide requirements for:

  • Mounting holes
  • Brackets
  • Handles
  • Cable exits
  • Connector positions
  • BMS access
  • Display openings

13. Operating Environment

Tell the manufacturer where the battery will operate.

Important information includes:

  • Indoor or outdoor use
  • Ambient temperature
  • Humidity
  • Dust exposure
  • Water exposure
  • Vibration
  • Shock
  • Altitude
  • Continuous or intermittent operation

This information can affect the enclosure, cell selection, BMS and thermal design.

14. Required Quantity

Tell us how many battery packs you need.

For example:

  • 1 prototype
  • 5 prototype units
  • 50 units
  • 100 units
  • 500 units
  • Regular production requirement

Prototype and production requirements may involve different manufacturing considerations.

15. Expected Production Timeline

If you have a target launch date, provide:

  • Prototype deadline
  • Testing deadline
  • Production start date
  • Required delivery schedule

This helps with planning from prototype development to production.

What If You Don’t Know All the Specifications?

You don’t need to know every technical specification before contacting a custom battery manufacturer.

At minimum, provide:

1. Application
2. Required voltage
3. Required capacity or operating time
4. Maximum current/load
5. Available battery dimensions
6. Battery photo/drawing, if replacing an existing pack
7. Quantity required
