Battery Capacity Calculator
Battery Capacity Calculator | Calculate Battery Capacity in Ah, Wh & Runtime
A Battery Capacity Calculator helps determine the required battery size based on your load power (W), operating voltage (V), required backup time (hours), or current (A). It is useful for designing battery systems for solar energy storage, UPS, electric vehicles, portable power stations, telecom, robotics, medical equipment, and industrial applications.
Battery Capacity Formula
Method 1: Calculate Capacity from Power
Battery Capacity (Ah) = (Load Power (W) × Backup Time (Hours)) ÷ Battery Voltage (V)
Example
- Load Power = 500W
- Battery Voltage = 48V
- Backup Time = 4 Hours
Capacity = (500 × 4) ÷ 48 = 41.7Ah
A battery of approximately 48V 50Ah would typically provide additional operating margin, though the final size depends on system efficiency and allowable depth of discharge.
Method 2: Calculate Energy (Wh)
Energy (Wh) = Battery Voltage (V) × Battery Capacity (Ah)
Example
- Voltage = 48V
- Capacity = 100Ah
Energy = 48 × 100 = 4,800Wh (4.8kWh)
Method 3: Calculate Runtime
Runtime (Hours) = Battery Energy (Wh) ÷ Load Power (W)
Example
- Battery = 48V 100Ah
- Energy = 4,800Wh
- Load = 600W
Runtime = 4,800 ÷ 600 = 8 Hours
Actual runtime will usually be lower due to inverter losses, battery management limits, cable losses, temperature, and usable battery capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do I calculate battery capacity?
Use the formula:
Battery Capacity (Ah) = (Load Power × Backup Time) ÷ Battery Voltage
What is the difference between Ah and Wh?
- Ah (Ampere-hours) measures electrical charge.
- Wh (Watt-hours) measures stored energy.
Two batteries can have the same Ah rating but different energy if their voltages differ.
How do I convert Ah to Wh?
Wh = Voltage × Ah
Example:
48V × 100Ah = 4,800Wh (4.8kWh)
Why is actual runtime different from calculated runtime?
Actual runtime can vary because of inverter efficiency, depth of discharge limits, temperature, battery ageing, wiring losses, and system operating conditions.
Which battery chemistry is best for energy storage?
LiFePO₄ (LFP) batteries are widely used for energy storage because they offer long cycle life, high efficiency, and good thermal stability.
